Launceston Country Club Golf Course

Played Saturday, August 22, 2020.

The 18-hole Country Club course was one I was looking forward to having played the back nine about twenty years ago.

The course is flat and has reasonably wide fairways and no real challenges in regard to distances – well, playing off the white tees anyway.

When we played, the course was wet. Very wet. At times we couldn’t get relief from casual water – there was just too much of it around. Slushy and muddy under foot.

The real test came down to the greens. Well kept, they were fast which given the condition of the rest of the course was a surprise. The pin placement was tricky without being unfair.

The green fees were $35 but we only paid $25 probably because we were part of two groups who booked beforehand.

The first hole is notable for the pond the tees overlook. To the enjoyment of our playing group I topped my drive nicely into the centre of it – twice. Perhaps I should’ve visited the driving range first! Once we made the green Tim attacked it with a wedge that landed near the back of the green and spun back to the flag near the front. Impressive.

Thankfully, on the second tee, my drive returned and for the rest of the round both of us had some good hits and nice putts.

Despite the wet conditions Tim and I really enjoyed the day and thought that if we’d played during the Summer months the course would’ve been brilliant with lightning greens!
