Barnbougle Dunes Golf Course

Played Friday, February 7, 2020.

Barnbougle is Tasmania’s best golf course. It’s ranked in the world’s top 100 and tests golfers of all capabilities. There are four tee locations, suited to different handicaps.

The most immediate difference noticed compared to the other courses Tim and I have played was the fairways. Incredibly short, more like a green apron. The clubhouse requests players to replace divots rather then fill in with sand – there are no buckets offered.

There are no trees but danger is everywhere. Grass tussocks are requested to be treated as water hazards as snakes are numerous (we came across one). Very soft bunkers are numerous and, as a curator admitted, are growing each year as their walls collapsed.

Greens are good but multi-paced and as a local pro described: like putting over buried elephants. We didn’t really rate them better than some of the other courses we’ve played to be honest.

Accuracy at Barnbougle is paramount. Good hits and a bit of luck’s needed. Both Tim and I had birdies and a few pars, Tim finished especially well. We were both happy with our games.

Finally, Tasmanian players are rewarded with a green fee discount – but you have to ask for it, the staff don’t offer it as they accept your payment ($124 when we played in 2020).
